Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones - A Masterpiece of Action and Platforming

Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones - A Thrilling Conclusion to the Sands of Time Trilogy

Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones is a 2005 action-adventure game developed by Ubisoft Montreal and Ubisoft Casablanca, and published by Ubisoft for various platforms, such as PlayStation 2, GameCube, Microsoft Windows, Xbox and Java (mobile phones only). The game was later censored and ported to the PlayStation Portable and Wii in 2007 under the title Prince of Persia: Rival Swords. The Two Thrones is the sixth main installment of the Prince of Persia series, and the final chapter of the Sands of Time trilogy; however, it is not the last game to be set in its continuity.

The story follows the Prince as he returns to his home in Babylon, only to find that his actions in Warrior Within have undone the events of The Sands of Time. The villainous Vizier is back from the dead and kills the Prince's companion Kaileena, absorbing the Sands of Time from her, which transform him into an immortal monster. Now, the Prince must work together with his past love Farah (whom he meets for the first time in this new timeline) to defeat the Vizier once and for all, while also struggling against his own Dark Prince persona, which is slowly corrupting him.

Gameplay

The game combines exploration and combat. Both elements make use of the Prince's acrobatic capability and agility. Throughout much of the game, the player must attempt to traverse the palace by running across walls, ascending or descending chasms by jumping back and forth between walls, avoiding traps, climbing structures and jumping from platform to platform, making other types of well-timed leaps, solving puzzles and using discovered objects to progress.

The combat system is similar to that of Warrior Within, but with some improvements and additions. The player can wield two weapons at a time: a primary weapon (the Dagger of Time) and a secondary weapon (which can be picked up from fallen enemies or found in certain locations). The secondary weapon can be thrown at enemies or used for special attacks. The player can also perform speed kills, which are stealthy one-hit kills that can be triggered when approaching an unaware or stunned enemy. Speed kills require precise timing of button presses as a visual cue appears on screen.

The game also features a new gameplay mechanic: the Dark Prince. At certain points in the story, the Prince will transform into his darker self due to his exposure to the Sands of Time. The Dark Prince has different abilities and weapons than the normal Prince. He can use a chain-like weapon called Daggertail to attack enemies from a distance or swing from poles. He can also manipulate sand gates to create sand vortexes that damage enemies or transport himself to different locations. However, he also has a drawback: he constantly loses health unless he absorbs sand from fallen enemies or sand fountains. The player can switch back to the normal Prince by finding a fountain of water.

Plot

The game's story is divided into nine chapters and 37 stages. Here is a brief summary of each chapter:

Chapter

Title

Description

1

The Ramparts

The Prince arrives in Babylon with Kaileena, only to find it under siege by the Vizier's army. He fights his way through the city walls, but is separated from Kaileena when she is captured by the Vizier.

2

The Harbor District

The Prince witnesses Kaileena's death at the hands of the Vizier, who stabs her with the Dagger of Time and absorbs the Sands of Time from her body. The Prince is also infected by the Sands, which give him a new ability: speed kills. He escapes from the Vizier's soldiers and meets Farah, who does not recognize him.

3

The Lower City

The Prince and Farah make their way through the lower city, where they encounter sand monsters and traps. The Prince also transforms into the Dark Prince for the first time, after falling into a pool of sand. He learns that he can use the Daggertail to swing from poles and manipulate sand gates.

4

The Arena

The Prince and Farah reach the arena, where they are captured by the Vizier's men and forced to fight a giant sand creature called the Arena Beast. The Prince manages to defeat the beast and free himself and Farah, but is confronted by the Vizier, who reveals his plan to use the Sands of Time to create an army of sand monsters and conquer the world. The Prince fights the Vizier, but is overpowered and thrown into a pit.

5

The Royal Workshop

The Prince survives the fall and finds himself in the royal workshop, where he discovers a chariot that he can use to escape. He rides the chariot through the city streets, avoiding obstacles and enemies, until he reaches the palace gates. He then enters the palace and reunites with Farah.

6

The Upper City

The Prince and Farah explore the upper city, where they find more sand monsters and puzzles. They also encounter a mysterious woman named Mahasti, who is one of the Vizier's generals and wields a pair of Daggertails. The Prince fights Mahasti, but she escapes with one of his Daggertails.

7

The Garden Tower

The Prince and Farah reach the garden tower, where they find a portal that leads to the past. The Prince decides to enter the portal, hoping to change his fate and prevent Kaileena's death. He leaves Farah behind and travels back in time to the Island of Time, where he first met Kaileena.

  • Switch between forms: The game allows you to switch between the normal Prince and the Dark Prince at certain points. Each form has its own advantages and disadvantages. The normal Prince is more agile and can use the Dagger of Time's powers, such as rewinding time, slowing down time or freezing enemies. The Dark Prince is more powerful and can use the Daggertail to attack enemies from a distance or manipulate sand gates. However, he also loses health constantly and can only replenish it by absorbing sand. Therefore, switch between forms according to the situation and your preference.
