We realized that there was a need to open up the purchase so that all of the student art was able to be seen and possibly purchased. The sale went public in 2015. In that first year, $3,000 worth of student art was sold, with proceeds going directly to the students, and in 2019, we sold over $13,000! Due to COVID-19, the 2020 sale moved online and we were thrilled to sell over $10,000 that went back to our student artists.
From 3-6pm on Friday April 21, the third floor atrium in Talley Student Union will be transformed into a student art sale. Each artist will be responsible for selling their work at a designated area. Arts NC State received a generous gift to create a Visual Artist Award in 2017. A judge with input from a panel of Arts NC State employees and students will select 1 2D piece, 1 3D piece, and 1 computer rendered or photography from the sale to win the awards. The student artists will receive a $500 cash award, their pieces will hang in a prominent display case in the Talley Student Union near Stewart Theater for the following academic year, and they will be honored at an annual ceremony.
Art must be returned in its original packaging. We will pay for return shipping on pieces measuring up to 50 inches on the longest side. For larger artwork we charge a return shipping fee of $300. Customers located outside of the contiguous United States are responsible for the cost of return shipping and any duties.

Furthermore, even if you have no direct connection to the education industry, there is a huge advantage to having your work discoverable by educational institutions. For example, students in the UK often find my artist website and study my artwork. Schools then link to my website. Authentic links from relevant websites provide a signal to Google that my website is high-quality (links from educational institutions are considered extra-valuable). This, in turn, makes Google trust my website more and rank it even higher. As noted above, sites that are ranked highly gain more visitors.
When someone contemplates buying your artwork (or other creative products) on a social media platform or a communal website with multiple sellers, buyers are often distracted by the countless other items showing up in their feed. You want people to be channeled towards your fantastic creations, without others competing for attention. On social or community websites, buyers are easily enticed away.
If ever there was a time to establish an online presence, it is now. Many artists and creative entrepreneurs who previously contemplated building a website have urgently prioritized this activity, given the events of the past few years. Many teachers are also deciding to create websites to help guide their students via distance learning. This adds a further rush of people snapping up domain names.
