Al Biruni, also known as Abu Rayhan Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Biruni, was a Persian scholar and polymath who lived in the 11th century. He is regarded as one of the greatest intellectuals of the Islamic Golden Age, and as a pioneer of various fields of science, such as astronomy, mathematics, physics, geology, geography, history, anthropology, and comparative religion. He was also fluent in several languages, including Arabic, Persian, Sanskrit, Hebrew, and Syriac.
One of his most famous works is Kitab ul Hind, or The Book of India, which he wrote in Arabic after spending several years in India as a part of the court of Mahmud of Ghazni, the ruler of the Ghaznavid Empire. Al Biruni traveled extensively in India and studied its culture, religion, philosophy, literature, geography, chronology, astronomy, customs, laws, and astrology. He also learned Sanskrit and translated several Indian texts into Arabic. He wrote Kitab ul Hind as a comprehensive and objective account of India based on his observations and sources. He also compared and contrasted Indian culture with other cultures that he was familiar with.
