Al Biruni, also known as Abu Rayhan Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Biruni, was a Persian scholar and polymath who lived in the 11th century. He is regarded as one of the greatest intellectuals of the Islamic Golden Age, and as a pioneer of various fields of science, such as astronomy, mathematics, physics, geology, geography, history, anthropology, and comparative religion. He was also fluent in several languages, including Arabic, Persian, Sanskrit, Hebrew, and Syriac.

One of his most famous works is Kitab ul Hind, or The Book of India, which he wrote in Arabic after spending several years in India as a part of the court of Mahmud of Ghazni, the ruler of the Ghaznavid Empire. Al Biruni traveled extensively in India and studied its culture, religion, philosophy, literature, geography, chronology, astronomy, customs, laws, and astrology. He also learned Sanskrit and translated several Indian texts into Arabic. He wrote Kitab ul Hind as a comprehensive and objective account of India based on his observations and sources. He also compared and contrasted Indian culture with other cultures that he was familiar with.

Kitab ul Hind is considered as one of the earliest and most valuable sources of information on India by a foreigner. It is also a remarkable example of intercultural dialogue and exchange in the medieval world. It is divided into 80 chapters that cover various aspects of Indian civilization. Some of the topics that Al Biruni discussed in his book are:

  • The geography and climate of India

  • The history and dynasties of India

  • The religions and sects of India, such as Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, Zoroastrianism, and Islam

  • The philosophy and logic of India

  • The literature and poetry of India

  • The sciences and arts of India

  • The astronomy and astrology of India

  • The calendar and chronology of India

  • The social and economic life of India

  • The customs and traditions of India

  • The laws and ethics of India

Al Biruni's Kitab ul Hind is not only a valuable source of information on India, but also a testimony to his curiosity, erudition, and respect for other cultures. He wrote in the introduction of his book:

"My book is nothing but a simple historic record of facts. I shall place before the reader the theories of the Hindus exactly as they are... I have to dwell on the facts which we can accept as true... I shall not produce the arguments of our antagonists in order to refute such of them as I believe to be in the wrong. My book is nothing but a simple historic record of facts."
