Brooks released his first studio album, Garth Brooks, in 1989, which spawned four hit singles, including "The Dance" and "If Tomorrow Never Comes". His second album, No Fences, was released in 1990 and became his best-selling album to date, with over 18 million copies sold in the US alone. It featured some of his most iconic songs, such as "Friends in Low Places", "The Thunder Rolls", and "Unanswered Prayers".

Brooks continued to dominate the country music scene throughout the 1990s, releasing six more studio albums: Ropin' the Wind (1991), The Chase (1992), In Pieces (1993), Fresh Horses (1995), Sevens (1997), and Scarecrow (2001). All of these albums reached number one on both the US Country and Billboard 200 charts, and achieved multi-platinum status. Some of his most popular songs from this period include "The River", "Shameless", "Standing Outside the Fire", "The Beaches of Cheyenne", "Longneck Bottle", and "More Than a Memory".

In 2001, Brooks announced his retirement from recording and touring, citing his desire to spend more time with his family. He did not release any new music until 2005, when he released a single called "Good Ride Cowboy" as a tribute to his friend and fellow country singer Chris LeDoux, who had died earlier that year. In 2007, he released another single called "More Than a Memory", which became the first song ever to debut at number one on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart.

In 2009, Brooks came out of retirement and began a residency show at the Encore Theatre at Wynn Las Vegas. He also started working on new music, releasing his ninth studio album, Man Against Machine, in 2014. His tenth studio album, Gunslinger, followed in 2016. In 2018, he released his first anthology album, The Anthology Part III: Live, which featured live recordings from his career. In 2019, he released his eleventh studio album, FUN, which included the singles "All Day Long", "Stronger Than Me", and "Dive Bar". In 2020, he released his twelfth studio album, The Ultimate Collection, which was a compilation of his greatest hits and fan favorites.

In addition to his studio albums, Brooks has also released two live albums: Double Live (1998) and The Garth Brooks World Tour Live (2015). He has also released three compilation albums: The Hits (1994), The Limited Series (1998), and The Ultimate Hits (2007). He has also released seven boxed sets: The Garth Brooks Collection (1994), The Limited Series (1998), The Limited Series (2005), The Entertainer (2006), The Ultimate Collection (2016), The Anthology Part I: The First Five Years (2017), and The Anthology Part II: The Road I'm On (2018).
